Preschool School Readiness

Drum to LEARN, Inc., is the forefront of an effort to get more awareness and explore ways to learn social and emotional skill building more effectively. The Drum to LEARN, Inc. program is "playtime with a purpose." This is for all ages from preschool to elementary. The effectiveness of drumming can be distracting in a good way during transitions. For insistence when a preschooler joins in and is introduced to just a few of the basic school readiness skills; sitting during circle time, focusing on activities, staying on task, and socially interacting with peers; it can be overwhelming to say the least. Being two years of age and new to the idea of a school setting; it seems hard for some to transition from leaving mom to staying with the teacher even for any short period of time.

During a drumming session it is not unheard of to have two year olds coming in with blankets, binky's, stuff animals, crying and clinging. One two year old boy came into my drum circle crying through his binky while holding it with his teeth. He cried and cried, the teacher said, "He has not stopped crying sense his mom dropped him off in the morning." They sat him on the teachers lap and just held him. We started into the drum session and before I knew it he stopped crying. As we continued he become quiet and even sat by himself and had fun drumming. As you can imagine the drumming process is claming, fun, and interactive. He smiled at me through his blinky and was enjoying himself terminally. This proves that the effectiveness of drumming can be distracting in a good way during transitions.

As I finished packing up I heard crying from the room next door. Out of curiosity, I went to see who was crying. It was the same two year old sitting outside the classroom on a little bench, I looked at the teacher and she said, "He starting crying right after he ended drumming and he has not stopped." Again, Drum to LEARN, Inc., is the forefront of an effort to get more awareness and explore ways to learn social and emotional skill building. We are on the right beat and the right path with helping develop the whole child.
